Massage can be defined as “The systematic and scientific manipulation of the soft tissues of the body”. It is hands-on treatment that mechanically moves the soft tissues of the body by employing different techniques such as kneading, efflurage, frictions, jostling, compressions and digital pressure to name but a few. The aim of massage is to promote optimum health of the soft tissues, decrease pain and restore normal Range Of Motion (ROM) of joints.
Swedish Massage
Swedish massage is today the most common style of massage. A swedish massage is also referred to as therapeutic or relaxation massage. It uses traditional manipulative techniques and it is common practice that as many body parts as possible are worked on. Relaxation of the muscles and a sedating effect on the nervous system are both desired outcomes.
Remedial Massage
A deeper and more specific style of massage based on the Swedish system but with more specialised techniques. Our remedial massage therapists aim to work on specific areas of dysfunction, injury or increased tension to restore optimal health, increase ROM and decrease pain. We make use of a variety of techniques for a desired and optimal result. Remedial treatments focus on the area of dysfunction and the treatment itself can be quite painful but always within the clients/patients pain limit and always with their consent to treatment. Depending on the presenting condition a few consecutive treatments may be necessary to resolve the condition. Some conditions that respond well to remedial massage are; Tension headaches, chronic muscle tightness/shortening due to bad posture, tendinitis and tendinosis, repetative strain injury (RSI), trigger point syndrome, patellofemoral syndrome and many more.
Sports Massage
Our sports therapists have a sound knowlegde of anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, biomechanics, pathology and rehabilitation procedures as well as a keen interest in sports and excellent palpatory and massage skills. This may seem as a tall order but as the area of sports massage is growing so are the demands placed on therapists, so striving for excellence in treatment is a must for us here at Team BodyM.
